Pizza Pino - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Pizza Pino is just a block from my house, so it’s a natural choice to go there. They have slices, delivery, and eat in. They had friendly service and the owners work in the restaurant. The owners said that they bought Pizza Pino last year.

Lucky Kitchen - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Lucky Kitchen has a good name. The food here is cheap, quick, and tastes ok. My lunch special with a drink cost under $7 and was ready in about 3 minutes.

Mongolian Barbeque - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Mongolian BBQ is a chain, and their website says it’s the first chain in Mongolia. I can’t imagine try to run a hygenic restaurant in Mongolia.

Anyway, Mongolian BBQ is another restaurant that people love for the process: take a bowl of food, add ingredients, and have it cooked. Repeat as needed. It’s probably more popular with tourists, but it’s a fun place to eat.

Cafe Zola - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Cafe Zola was packed on a weekday lunch. I’ve been eating lunch in A2 for the past month and haven’t seen this type of lunch hour crowd until now.

I dined with my 2 Ann Arbor aunts who are helping me find a house. Every time I mention an A2 restaurant, it seems that my aunts have been there at least 5 times. Zola is no exception. I ordered a mushroom crepe (Europe taught me to appreciate the savory crepe) and it was delicious.

Middle Kingdom - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

The street sign for Middle Kingdom read “Best Chinese Food.” I was convinced, so I walked in for an 11:05am lunch. I ate General Tso’s chicken. I onced asked a waitress who General Tso was and received an intense 5 minute lecture. I didn’t make that mistake this time.

Middle Kingdom has been here since 1982. Their menu tells me that I’m the Rooster and that I’m selfish and compatible with the dragon. Seems about right.

Mahek - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Mahek serves up a nice Indian buffet with variety and friendly service. The food was fresh even though I came a bit later than the typical diner. With a drink, the price came to about $10, which I think is fair.

The decor is a bit bland (when I was taking a picture a random guy made a sarcastic comment about the bland scenery) but they have outdoor seating in the summer.

Cafe Felix - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

I always thought that Cafe Felix was just a coffee shop; it’s much more. I stopped in for breakfast on a rainy last week. The entrance opens up into an elegant European style restaurant serving French food. Say what you want about the French, but they do have great food.

I had quiche (real men do eat quiche, c’mon it’s just a mix of pie and scrambled eggs) and a coffee. Everything was great and I’d like to come back for dinner.

Dominick’s - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

Dominick’s is another institution in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately they seem to be living off this status. Of course, sangria is great, and so is their building. I showed up at 9pm, and about every 5 minutes they would blast their loudspeaker to announce a food order or that they were closing at 10pm.  They even made a specific announcement to say that we couldn’t use the bathroom after 10pm.

When I was going to the business school at Umich I was at Dominick’s with some friends. I had the following conversation with a guy drinking at the table next to us.

Random dude: Are you guys in the business school?
My Group: Yes
Random dude: Can I have a dollar?

Washtenaw Dairy - Ann Arbor Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Bars

If you want to see a group of refined young women turn into a group of shrieking, giggling schoolgirls, mention two words: Washtenaw Dairy.

Washtenaw Dairy serves huge ice cream cones, and some people get excited simply because I mention my adddress (I live 2 blocks from the ice cream store). I don’t know if they thought I was dangerously underweight, but a single scoop means an overflowing waffle cone, and I finished with ice cream everywhere, including the tip of my nose. But that’s why sleeves were created.

Six years ago during the power outage of 2003 I heard rumor accross Ann Arbor that ice cream stores were giving away free ice cream. We hussled over to Washtenaw Dairy to find that they had a generator.
